Many middle aged adults experience major life events that can cause a period of psychological stress or depression. Midlife crisis is the major life event that changes women's lives. The women of today handle the stress and transition better than their mothers and grandmothers. They off-set the transition by adding more personal activities to their everyday life; school, vacations, etc.

The cruelest cut is when you have people cutting themselves. A growing population of boys and girls for whom cutting, burning or other self injuring is becoming a common way of managing emotional pain. Psychologist have been conduction surveys and gathering data from clinics, hospitals, private practices, and they are shocked by their findings. According to ones study in the Journal of Abnormal Psychology from 14% to 39% of adolescents engage in self mutilating behavior.

SUMMARY:
This article on medicine and how we are still harvesting from it even after 40 years. Researchers in the drug industry found that genes of healthy cells process differently from those of cancerous cells and disease causing bacteria and viruses. By targeting these cells and microbes with drugs that interfere with replication they established an approach that led to new drug therapies for many diseases including leukemia and malaria. In 1964 a researcher developed a revolutionary drug for heart disease that blocks nerve receptors or beta receptors, thus preventing the heart rate from increasing with damaging speed. Beta blockers is now widely used to treat heart disease and hypertension.

I chose this article because i found it interesting to know even after 40 years from 1988 and now the beta blockers are still being used for heart disease and hypertension blocking the new receptors.

The wives and children of elected officials are fighting the pressure to be perfect and learning a tough lesson. They try to balance between private needs and public expectations. Many don't know how to reach a balance. Some Psychologist argue that have received help may be better able to serve the public, but even family counseling may be seen as a sign of weakness.

RELATES TO CLASS:
This article is pertaining to behavior. The behavior perception of how people view elected officials and their families and how the public see them. If they seek help they could be looked upon as being weak.
